Mold Damage Removal

MoldMold is a disgusting thing. It can be hazardous to your health and it can destroy your home. If you don’t do preventative maintenance on your home then you might have problems in the future. For example, cleaning out your gutters, making sure downspouts are extended long enough and dirt around foundation is sloping outward so water drains away from your foundation. Check for leaky pipes periodically and run a dehumidifier daily to keep moisture levels down. If you don’t do these things then you could have the perfect setting for mold to grow. Finding mold in your basement can be horrifying depending on the extent of the growth. If it is just a small area that you feel you can handle yourself then here is the proper equipment to clean up mold safely. For an entire room of heavy mold growth you may want to consult a professional.

Respirator

Wear a respirator to avoid breathing in mold spores and fumes depending on the mold cleaner you use. There are a wide variety of respirators out there and you want to be sure you pick the right kind suitable for mold removal. In my research I found the Breath Buddy Respiratory Mask. This mask
eliminates any hint of airborne contaminants from your lungs without affecting your breathing. These contaminants include dust, mold, EVA foam, paint/varnish fumes, galvanized fumes, ammonia, organic gases, volcanic ashes, petroleum-based vapor, fiber dust etc. The Breath Buddy Respirator is reusable and it is perfect if you work with

wood, dust, clay, paint or any kind of organic vapors or fumes (gasoline, paint thinner, solvents and any other petroleum-based products). Kit includes mask, filters and safety glasses. Click on image for more info.

Tyvek Coverall Suit

When dealing with mold you want be completely protected. I recommend wearing DuPont Tyvek Suita tyvek suit to avoid getting covered in mold spores. The DuPont TY122S Tyvek Suit is a cheap and easy way to stay clean. Standard zipper front Tyvek coverall with attached hood, non-skid booties and elastic at the wrist. You may want to order a bigger size to avoid being like the Hulk and ripping the seems when working. This suit costs under $8 on Amazon. You also want to wear
gloves. SHOWA 730 Nitrile Cotton Flock-lined Chemical Resistant Gloves will do the job. They cost under $16 for a pack of 12 pairs also found on Amazon.

Mold Killer/Cleaners

There are many options to neutralize mold. There is the organic way of spraying on hydrogen peroxide and vinegar or baking soda and vinegar. There is also chemical cleaners such as RM 141 RTU Mold Killer. This is a fungicide cleaner and disinfectant found on Amazon for $13.99. Concrobium mold control is a professional-grade, EPA-registered solution that eliminates mold and prevents it from coming back. Concrobium mold control contains zero toxic chemicals
such as bleach or ammonia and is green-spec listed. The solution is ideal for mold remediation in homes and businesses and for mold clean-up and prevention following water damage. Concrobium can be found on Amazon for around $40/gallon. Which ever product you decide to use I would

recommend keeping your protective gear on. Any carpet, insulation, clothes or fabrics with mold on them should be thrown away. If you had severe water damage beware of mold behind your drywall and in your insulation. Concrete walls and drywall with surface mold on them should be neutralized with whichever product you choose and then sanded down to fully remove the mold and vacuumed up with a HEPA vacuum.

HEPA Vacuum Cleaners

Vacuums with a HEPA [high efficiency particulate air] filter are less likely to push allergens back into the room, also known as small-particle filters, these HEPA filters can capture more than 99.97 percent of particles that are at least 0.3 microns in size and prevent them from being returned into the air. I recommend using a HEPA vacuum in your home every time you clean your carpets and rugs as it traps allergens, dust mites, and pet dander instead of releasing them back into the air like a standard vacuum would. Here are a few HEPA vacuums that i have found to work for everyday cleaning and your mold removal project. It is always a good idea to have a wet/dry vacuum just in case you have a water leak in your home. The Vacmaster 4 gallon wet/dry vacuum is a good buy with great ratings. This powerful floor vacuum has a strong 2-stage industrial motor making it quieter, last longer and

provide greater suction. It’s easy to use, lightweight and portable with great features like automatic cord rewind, triple filtration, onboard accessory storage and a large dust-sealed on/off switch.

Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional NV356E a lightweight 2 in 1 Lift Away upright vacuum with adetachable canister for portable cleaning power. With the push of a button, Lift Away technology allows you to lift the canister away and easily clean in hard to reach areas. This vacuum is also equipped with a completely sealed system and a HEPA filter to trap dust and allergens. It also includes a Brush roll Shutoff button so you can easily switch between carpet and bare floor cleaning, and fine particles off your bare floors. If your looking for a cordless vacuum with good reviews then here is the ROOMIE TEC Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner with Stand-Alone Battery, HEPA Filter, 2 in 1 Handheld Dust Buster with Powerful Suction, Low Reach Design & LED Headlights. This vacuum can be used as full upright vacuum or detached into a small handheld dustbuster. With 2 power settings, the ECO mode has approximately 35 minutes of run time, while the Max mode can run for about 16 minutes and has a charge time of 4-5 hours. They do have options to buy a second battery.

My Conclusion

These tips are just one way to tackle light mold problems in your home. If you are unsure of how extensive your mold damage is contact a professional. If you have extreme flood damage that was left standing for a long period of time, chances are mold has infiltrated your walls and insulation. Light surface mold caused by humidity from not running a dehumidifier can be cleaned up using these methods above. Always be better safe then sorry and wear PPE (personal protective equipment) and always use a HEPA vacuum to contain small particles. If mold is contained to one area of your home, use plastic and tape to seal off that room to prevent mold spores from contaminating the rest of your home during the removal process. This is some very detailed information! One of the rooms in my house actually has a bit of mold on the walls because of the high humidity, but I never knew it to be so, well, destructive. So thanks for opening my eyes on this topic!

Thank you for this information, Tim! I lived in a house once where where the mold was so bad we probably should have been wearing a respirator mask and hazard suit at all times. But we didn’t and I ended up with a severe case of bronchitis that lasted for months. We have since moved, but this information will come in handy if we ever have the problem again. But until then, and I hope it doesn’t happen, I will bookmark this page for routine maintenance on my house. Thanks again!
